The most baffling praise of Infinite Jest is that it’s funny. It’s not. This is captured in how its most famous sentiment (“[wtf] is water”) is buried in filler about “Bob Death smiled coolly”. You can make the case that it’s a good and important book (I disagree) without defending its “humor.”
